Super Visa Insurance

Request Quote

Your parents or grandparents have been approved to visit. Now Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires proof that they are covered by a Canadian medical insurance policy before their visa is issued. We make that straightforward.

Who this is for

The super visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit for up to five years at a time, unlike a regular visitor visa which permits stays of only six months. The trade-off is a stricter application process, and medical insurance is a non-negotiable part of it.

IRCC requires the sponsor to provide proof that the visiting parent or grandparent is covered by a Canadian insurance company for at least $100,000 in emergency medical, hospitalization, and repatriation, and the policy must be valid for a minimum of one year from the date of entry.

Why provincial health coverage doesn't apply

  • Parents and grandparents visiting on a super visa are not eligible for provincial health coverage (OHIP or equivalent), regardless of how long they stay.

  • A single emergency hospitalization in Canada can exceed $10,000 per day. Complex cases often reach six figures.

  • IRCC requires proof of insurance before the super visa is issued. An underinsured or expired policy can delay or invalidate the visa.

What the policy covers

Emergency medical care

Hospital stays, physician visits, diagnostic tests, and specialist referrals arising from a sudden illness or accident during the visit.

Hospitalization

In-patient and out-patient care, surgery, and post-operative recovery at any Canadian hospital or medical facility.

Prescription drugs

Medications prescribed as a direct result of a covered emergency. Routine prescriptions from home are not covered.

Repatriation

Medical transport or repatriation to the visitor's home country if their condition requires it, including an escort when medically necessary.

Accidental dental

Emergency dental treatment from an accidental blow to the mouth. Routine cleanings and elective work are not included.

Coverage details, exclusions, and pre-existing condition definitions vary by insurer and plan. Jatinder will walk you through the policy wording before you purchase.

A note on pre-existing conditions

Many plans offer coverage for stable pre-existing conditions: those that have been managed without change in medication, treatment, or symptoms for a defined period before the effective date. Some insurers extend coverage to conditions that are not stable for an additional premium. The right plan depends on the applicant's health profile; the quote form below is the starting point for that conversation.
